Rockpool edge, 2023
Handwoven tapestry – woven at 8 warps per inch on cotton warp.
Materials – cotton, linen, rayon, wool.
Size – 18cm square (including limewaxed wooden frame.)
A preparatory study for a larger tapestry I’m currently working on. The inspiration source is Inganess beach, just outside Kirkwall on mainland Orkney, on a Spring day. This study explores the colours and textures of a rockpool at low tide.
I don’t always find smaller studies necessary for my creative process, in painting or handwoven tapestry, but they can be useful for experimenting with different techniques, textures and colour blends before venturing onto the “real thing.” Often they become lovely individual artworks in their own right.
