Handwoven tapestry – woven at 8 warps per inch on cotton warp.

Materials – cotton, linen, rayon, wool.

Size – 17cm (h) x 18cm (w) (including limewaxed wooden frame.)

A preparatory study for a larger tapestry I’m currently working on. The inspiration source is Inganess beach, just outside Kirkwall on mainland Orkney, on a Spring day. This study explores the subtle colour gradation and textural mark making from the sky section of my oil pastel drawing which my current larger tapestry artwork is based on.

Smaller studies aren’t always necessary for my creative process, in painting or handwoven tapestry, but they can be useful for experimenting with different techniques, textures and colour blends before venturing onto the “real thing.” Often they become lovely individual artworks in their own right.
